Mother’s Day is one of those Sundays that arrives each year with a mixture of joy and tenderness. For many, it is a day of gratitude—a day to remember the steady hands that held us, the prayers whispered over us, the sacrifices made quietly and without applause. For others, it is a day touched with grief: mothers who are gone, children who are missed, hopes that were never fulfilled. The church is one of the few places where all of that can sit side by side—joy and sorrow, gratitude and ache—held together by the love we share for Jesus and the love He shares with us.
Consider the rich pictures that God gives us in His Word when it comes to motherhood. From Eve, the “mother of all living,” to Sarah laughing at the promise of God, to Hannah pouring out her soul in prayer, to Mary treasuring all these things in her heart. That is just a sampling of the vast tapestry of motherhood that we see in the Bible. Scripture honors by showing them as real women who walked by faith. Proverbs 31 speaks of a woman whose strength and dignity come not from perfection, but from fearing the Lord. Paul reminds Timothy that the faith that lived first in his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice had taken root in him as well. God often sows the seeds of truth in a family through the quiet faithfulness of the mother.

But Mother’s Day also reminds us of something deeper: every good gift in our lives is meant to point us back to the Giver. When we honor mothers, we are ultimately honoring the God who works through them. Their tenderness reflects His compassion. Their strength reflects His faithfulness. Their patience reflects His long suffering love. Even their imperfections remind us that our hope is not in human goodness, but in the grace of the One who never fails.
For those who find this day difficult, Scripture speaks a gentle word. The psalmist says, “As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you” (Isaiah 66:13). God does not overlook the wounds of the heart. He draws near to the brokenhearted. He gathers His people like a shepherd gathers lambs, carrying them close to His heart. The love we long for, the love we miss, the love we remember—all of it finds its fullness in Him.
So on this Mother’s Day, we give thanks. We honor the women who have shaped us, taught us, prayed for us, and loved us. We remember those who are gone and those who grieve. We celebrate the mothers among us who are walking faithfully in a world that does not always see their labor. And above all, we lift our eyes to the Lord, who made this day, who fills it with mercy, and who holds every family, every story, and every heart in His hands.
May God bless the mothers in our midst, and may He bless all of us as we walk in the light of His steadfast love.
