The God of the Bible, the True and Living God is “The Most High God.” As we continue to study the different names for God in the Bible, we come to this phrase first in Genesis 14.18-20. In Hebrew it would be pronounced “El Elyon.” It emphasizes God’s exalted status above all creation and reveals God’s ultimate authority and control over the universe.
The revelation of God as “The Most High God” begins with Melchizedek, the king of Salem and a priest of “El Elyon,” who blesses Abram after his victory over the kings. Melchizedek proclaims, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth. And praise be to God Most High, who delivered your enemies into your hand” (Genesis 14:19-20). This encounter highlights God’s position as the supreme ruler and the source of all blessings and deliverance.
“El Elyon’s” sovereignty is a recurring theme throughout Scripture. In Psalm 57:2, David cries out, “I cry out to God Most High, to God who vindicates me.” Here, David recognizes God’s ultimate authority and his trust in Him for protection and justice. In another place, in Isaiah 14:13-14, we see a contrast between Lucifer’s ambition to exalt himself above God and His rightful place as the Most High.
In the New Testament, God’s supremacy is evident in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. Jesus, the Son of the Most High, demonstrated God’s authority over nature, disease, and even death. In Luke 1:32, the angel Gabriel announces to Mary that her son “will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.” This affirms Jesus’ divine identity.
As believers, acknowledging that God is the “Most High God” inspires awe and reverence for His majesty. It also reminds us that though we make our choices, it is God who makes the final decision (Proverbs 16.9). In times of uncertainty, we can find comfort in knowing that God Most High is sovereign and His plans are perfect.
Our response to God’s sovereignty should be one of worship and submission. By recognizing His authority, we align our lives with His will and trust in His purposes. This trust empowers us to face our lives and even our death in confidence, knowing that God reigns.
In our church community, let us proclaim and worship El Elyon, the Most High God. May we live in awe of His greatness and submit to His sovereign rule, finding peace and assurance in His perfect plan. Truly God invites us to find peace in His authority and trust in His unfailing love.
