In our continuation to learn of the various names and character of God in relation to our lives and being, There is one that stands out as a name that speaks to the nature of our personal relationship with our Creator. The ancient Hebrew would pronounce it something like “El Chaiyai”, which translates to “The God of My Life,” emphasizes God’s role as the sustainer and source of our very existence. This name, found in Psalm 42:8, reveals a deep truth about God’s constant presence and care in our lives.

The psalmist writes, “By day the Lord directs his love, at night his song is with me—a prayer to the God of my life.” This declaration of faith reflects a deep, personal connection with God, acknowledging Him as the one who directs, sustains, and nurtures our lives. In moments of despair and longing we, like the psalmist, can find comfort and hope in the God of our lives.
God’s sustaining presence is evident throughout Scripture. In Acts 17:28, Paul proclaims this truth, saying, “For in him we live and move and have our being.” This verse reminds us that our very existence is anchored in God, and it is through Him that we find purpose and meaning. Similarly, in John 10:10, Jesus declares, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
In the New Testament, we see the fulness of God in the life and ministry of the Lord. Jesus, the source of eternal life, offers living water to those who thirst and the bread of life to those who hunger. His sacrificial death and resurrection provide the ultimate assurance of life beyond the grave, affirming that He is the God of our life, both now and forever.
Recognizing that God is the God of our very lives invites us to cultivate a personal and intimate relationship with God. It encourages us to rely on Him as the source of our strength, guidance, and sustenance. In times of uncertainty or weariness, we can draw near to Him, confident in His boundless love.
Our response to God should be one of gratitude and devotion. By acknowledging Him as the God of our life, aligning our hearts with His will shall become a point of growth and maturity in our faith which gives us the strength for us to face the world with its sorrows with confidence, assured in our knowledge that God is our constant companion and sustainer.
