In the Book of Revelation, we see that the Lord reveals Himself as the “Alpha and Omega,” a phrase that He uses to illustrate His eternal nature and ultimate sovereignty. Of course, the Alpha is the first letter in the Greek alphabet, and Omega is the last. Therefore, the point of this is to show us that the Lord encompasses all of time. He was here before time began, and He will be here after it comes to an end. Because of His omnipresent nature, He transcends our methods of telling time and He is in the past, present and future at once.. Nothing in history occurred without His witness and knowledge. All things exist by Him, through Him and in Him. If the Lord did not exist all would be nothing.

God declares, “I am the first and I am the last; apart from me there is no God” (Isaiah 44.6). Here, God affirms His uniqueness and supremacy. There is no one before Him, and nothing will outlast Him. Similarly, Isaiah 48:12 echoes this sentiment, “I am He; I am the first, I am also the last.” These proclamations reveal God’s authority over Israel’s history and His eternal, unchanging presence.
In Revelation, the title “Alpha and Omega” is attributed to Jesus Christ, further emphasizing His divinity. Revelation 21:6 states, “I am the Alpha and the Omega,

the Beginning and the End.” This verse comes in the context of the new creation, where God’s redemptive plan reaches its completion. It reminds us that God initiates all things and faithfully brings His purposes to fulfillment. Similarly, Revelation 22:13 declares, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.” In this final proclamation of Scripture, the eternal reign of the Lord is proclaimed, offering hope and assurance to all believers.
To call God the “Alpha and Omega” is to acknowledge His eternal power, His omnipotence, and His role as the ultimate source of life and salvation. From creation to eternity, He is sovereign, faithful, and worthy of all praise. This title assures believers that the God who began His work in us will bring it to perfect completion through Jesus Christ.
